What inspires you to teach/coach people? The Ah-ha moment. The look in people’s eyes when they get it and it all clicks. When I work with clients I feel like I preach, preach, preach but I love it when 6 months or a year later we are having a cocktail at happy hour and they are talking about a project they are working on and how the other parties involved just don’t get it and they look at me and say, “they need you”. Its because they get it now and I have taught them well.

Who was one of your most influential mentors and what’s one of the most important lessons you learned from them? One of my bosses (the Senior Partner) at a marketing research company I worked for (who is still my client). He founded the company on his own and grew it to an 11 person company. He told me one time that in any business you need a finder, minder and grinder. That no one person can truly be all 3 and you need to find people’s natural strengths for one of those 3 areas and you will all be successful together.

What’s one piece of advice you would give to someone just starting out in your field? Niche into a special skill and then do it better than anyone else. Having a general knowledge of your field is great but having a special skill makes you more in demand, you can charge more and is a more concise message for potential clients to comprehend.

If you could pick one person to spend an hour learning from (they could be anywhere in the world) who would you pick?
Oprah. With an empire like that she must superior time management skills and drive. I’d like some of that.

What are the benefits of meeting clients over live video? You can see the expression on their face in real time and I can see when they are comprehending what I’m trying to teach. I get to see that ah-ha moment.
